Visit to Wren-Darne Cemetery

  • Wren-Darne Cemetery 2615 Hillsman Street Falls Church, VA (map)

Please join Freedom Hill members in presenting Pete Greene with the Historic Preservation Recognition Award for his outstanding efforts to preserve the historic Wren-Darne cemetery.

The cemetery was established in the 1700s. Family members buried there include Colonel James Wren, a Revolutionary War patriot whose service includes serving in the Fairfax County Militia, as a Commissioner, and giving supplies to the army; and veterans of the War of 1812 and Civil War.

In the mid-1900s, the cemetery fell into disrepair, with ivy, weeds and garbage allowed to take over. Pete lived next to the overgrown plot for many years. Once he discovered it was a cemetery, he became set on purchasing it because he felt this treatment of a cemetery was disrespectful. He approached the owner and, after years of negotiating, purchased it in 2012 at his own expense. He has worked tirelessly to restore the cemetery. Further, he has brought together members of the community in his mission - neighbors, school groups, local businesses, Scout troops, and our chapter.

The members of Freedom Hill placed a marker at the cemetery this past July in honor of Colonel Wren. Please email if you would like to join and recognize Pete’s amazing efforts.
